If you’ve been busy making your Route 66 mix tape, then I’m sure you’re familiar with the words “well I’m a standin’ on a corner in Winslow Arizona” from The Eagles song “Take it Easy” …. “it’s a girl, my Lord, in a flat bed Ford, slowin’ down to take a look at me” … I mean honestly - giddy up!
Winslow Arizona is one of so many towns that had their once thriving community decimated by the construction of the i-40 highway in the 1970’s , as it completely bypassed the town.
Determined to bring life back to the town as a tourist destination, the Standin’ on the Corner Park was created, and it really is worth a visit.
It is, in fact, on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, and is tiny, but extremely photogenic. You’ll find a two storey tromp-l’oell mural, which makes a perfect background for the Ford flatbed truck, and bronze statues of Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey that are dotted through the park.. The intersection the park sits on also has a spectacular route 66 route marker painted on the road.(I read that it can be seen from space, but have not found any confirmation from anyone who actually saw it from space)
Kitsch meets pop history in what has become a “must visit” for Route 66 travellers, and Eagles fans alike.
Standin’ on the corner park has revitalised the town of Winslow, and EVERY corner in Winslow, Arizona once again has bustling businesses, many selling souvenirs, and with their own mom and pop style photo ops.
Winslow is now also home to the annual “Standin’ on the Corner Festival”, featuring Eagles tribute bands, food, arts and crafts and horseshoe and cornhole tournaments. - yee ha
