Leonard's Bakery, since 1952.
We went for the sign and stayed for the malasadas.
It was Leonard who introduced the Portuguese treat, malasadas, to Hawaii, and now the bakery is famous for them, with lines spilling out the door.
I have to admit I’d never heard of a malasada - turns out, it’s a delicious gooey filled hot donut. (I just said ALL the magic words)
We tried the custard filled, and the jelly filled, purely for research purposes. Deliciousness confirmed.
oh, and that neon sign - -to die.
PS - we revisited Leonards Bakery in May 2023.
This time around we noticed a mini museum outside the store to the left of the serving window. It has lots of vintage ephemera accompanying the history of Leonards Bakery.
