If you only have a day or two in Hollywood, then The Hollywood Museum is a must visit.
Yes, the hoity toity Academy Museum takes a hi-brow educational and historical view of film history, but for our money, the more haphazard kitschy low brow Hollywood Museum is where it's at.
The location is inside the glorious original art deco Max Factor Building. The Max factor connection is reason enough to visit the museum. The beautiful chandelier filled pink marble art deco foyer, and the various makeup studios, each tinted to best present various skin types and hair colours are all wonderful and glamorous. Hordes of alluring and beguiling stars from the golden age of Hollywood have stepped through the same doors that you will walk through. Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, Carole Lombard, the list goes on and on, and you can see images of hundreds of stars consulting with Max Factor in the very room you are standing in.
The four floors of the museum house an eclectic mix of permanent and rotating exhibits. You will always find a huge collection of original and replica costumes, film and TV used cars, and a highlight for us — the bicycle from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure!
It’s hard to say what will be on display when you visit, but let’s just say the curators are maximalists, and you will see hundreds of pieces of Hollywood History.
We love the Hollywood Museum and visit as often as possible. It’s never the same twice, and its always a joy.
