What could be better than a 15-foot-tall giant blue angel standing on a pedestal on a sketchy street corner in downtown Las Vegas …. how about she is also on a giant lazy Susan and slowly twirls all day long!? magic.

The giant Blue Angel dates back to 1957 when she presided over the long-gone Blue Angel motel. She was designed by Betty Willis, who also created the famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign in the 1950’s. Some say Williss modelled the Blue Angel after Marilyn Monroe, and some say she is the blue angel from Pinocchio - either way the question remains the same - Betty, what were you thinking?

Although the Blue Angel motel was demolished in 2015, it’s neon sign, and the blue angel statue were refurbished by the City of Las Vegas and installed as public art in the same neighborhood they had always lived in. In 2022 a plaque was added beside the Blue Angel explaining her historical and cultural significance.

It’s fun to visit the statue by day to appreciate her details, her flowing gown, long lashes, and wavy blonde hair, and also fun to visit her at night when she is lit up with a blue neon glow recalling the heyday of Vegas motel culture and all its neon glory.
